In more than 40 years of practice, Paul has acquired extensive experience in many legal areas, with a focus on litigation matters including complex construction, business, and insurance litigation. Paul also has experience in dealing with professional errors and omissions and product liability cases. He has served as a mediator in a wide variety of circumstances and has acted as an arbitrator. He has been and continues to be an advisor to self-regulating professions and has broad experience in their conduct and discipline proceedings. Paul has appeared before all levels of courts in Alberta, the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada.

He was appointed as Queen's Counsel in 1998 and currently holds an “AV” rating from Martindale Hubbell. Paul was elected as a bencher of the Law Society of Alberta in 1997, and served in that capacity for three terms from 1998 to 2004. He was a member of the Law Society Executive, and served on numerous committees including the Appeal Committee and Practice Review. He was the appointed Law Society representative on the Minister’s Advisory Committee on Judicial Appointments and the Legal Aid Governance Committee. Paul chaired several other committees of the Law Society including Professional Responsibility (Ethics), Insurance, Civility Initiative, and the Code of Conduct Subcommittee.
Paul taught as a sessional instructor in Advocacy at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Law from 1993 to 2004. He is a past instructor of the Alberta Bar Admission Course and has made presentations to many Canadian Bar Association subsections.
Outside of the profession, Paul has long been active in a variety of community organizations and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Edmonton Symphony Society for six years. In 2005 he became a member of the Board of Directors of Pro Coro Canada, where he served until 2008.
