Emery Jamieson LLP is a long established law firm offering an exciting opportunity for the right candidate as the firm’s Controller. With its main office located in downtown Edmonton, the firm has grown significantly through recent mergers and is now in the process of transitioning to a new business software solution to facilitate its continuing growth plans. The firm is looking for an experienced Controller with a CPA designation to join their team.
Reporting directly to the firm’s COO the Controller’s responsibilities include:
- Responsible for accounting activities relating to the maintenance of a complete and accurate general ledger and the resultant managerial reports and financial statements;
- Management and oversight of a two team member accounting group including mentoring, support, training and career development;
- Classify, examine and analyze accounting records and prepare related financial reports and statements and law society reporting;
- Play a key role in assisting with the development of the appropriate financial controls, procedures and processes in the transition to the firm’s new business solution;
- Prepare standard and specialized financial reports (e.g. balance sheets, income statements, monthly closing reports) and staying in compliance according to regulatory requirements;
- Coordinates / prepares year end financial statements and supporting working papers, assist with budgeting processes and analyzing the firm’s performance metrics;
- Assist the COO with merger related activities;
- Establish, maintain and coordinate the implementation of accounting control procedures and business process efficiencies.
- Other duties as assigned by the COO.
Position Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years in a Controller’s position or equivalent role.
- Formal training in audit processes and/or review engagement assignments with a public accounting firm and hold a CPA designation.
- Ability to easily manage multiple projects and deadlines at the same time.
- Ability to easily work independently as well as a member of a team.
- Ability to supervise the technical work of staff with a keen eye to developing task efficiencies and streamlining processes.
- High integrity and ability to keep information confidential.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills and using software tools for effective data analysis.
